So I found this sort of strat knock off at a flea market, and have so far found exactly one google result that matches it, and that told me absolutely nothing beyond 'Cort, probably 80's'. Got it for about €50. The headstock says 'Cort electric guitar' and there's two stickers on the back with a serial number, WO20785, and 'Fabrique en Coree', which I guess means 'made in Korea' in French. As you can see from the photos there's no pickup selector switch.

Instead it has individual volume controls (I took two of the knobs off because they were broken and needed to be replaced) The neck is certainly not maple, but looks kind of light in tone for rosewood (nota bene, I've never had a rosewood neck at all, so I'm not sure what one would look like). The fretboard is strangely matted (perhaps from age), and I don't think that's its natural colour, rather, the wood looks like it has been stained dark. So, any guesses? Is there any way of telling when this thing was made, if it has a model name, and if it has any kind of value today? I figured it'd be pretty obscure (I doubt the guy selling it knew what it was, let alone could play it), but it's always nice to have some input. The feel is not terrible. Keep in mind my regular guitar is an OLP MM4 (Musicman Silhouette copy) so I'm not comparing it to anything particularly expensive anyway. It's a bit rough around the edges, the frets do tend to snag if you run your fingers along the edges of the fretboard, but it's nothing that'll trouble me personally when actually playing, and the strings were riding very high when I bought it. That's not a huge issue for me speed wise (I'm slow, d'uh), but it did make it hard to tune properly.

Lowering the bridge made it tune way better, but now it's rattling instead, of course. I'm going to try to find a happy middle. If I can't I'll just take it to my local store and let them have a go at it. The sound seems pretty standard single coil to me.

It doesn't have that strat cluck at all though, but more of a direct, slightly sharp sound (I probably wouldn't care to play it clean too much). By comparison, my OLP is more rounded when you turn on some overdrive and has a sort of singing bass that gets a bit muddled (lots of overtones I guess). On the Cort the bass is snappier, but also is thinner, and getting a smooth bluesy lead sound from the neck pickup seems difficult. Rolling off the tone knob does get you some of the way there, but it has virtually no effect at all until it's already down to about 2-3, so there's not a whole lot of play there. Mixing the pickups doesn't seem to have much effect. The neck and bridge alone sound different just like you'd expect, the bridge having more attack and the neck more body, but turning both of them up, the sound is difficult to distinguish from using just the neck.
