There are many reasons why you would and a few reasons why you wouldn't. Here's an example. Lets say you have a layer (text) that you would like to add effects too and also have the text in 3D space. Once you have created the text layer, and pre comped it, any effects you add to that comp, are always applied to anything in the comp. So, you add all your effects then decide you want to change to text to a different script or even a logo. If you go into the comp to change the text, or switch it out with a logo its instantly updated in the original project and all the effects and positioning is applied.

If you duplicated the comp at all for any reason it will also update the duplicates which is always useful and speedy. Also some After Effects effects work better when applied to text of anything with an alpha channel, when applied to a comp rather than to the text directly. There will be several others who will reply with many other reasons and examples, but this should get you started. Also try youtubing the question to see other perspectives.

Christian michael. For me precomping is usefull for many reasons. First of all is applying the same effect so multiple layers, which can´t be done by adjustmentlayers because you need some kind of alpha channels or parenting. Second reason for precompong is non destructiv-workflow, aspecially when you need to swap elements.

Third and last i mention of many more reasons is rendertime, because if you need a layer stack for multiple layers, then you lower the over all rendertime. Pre-comps are rendered first in the comp depth.
